Making Art During COVID-19

We have a bit of a situation on our hands! At no surprise to anyone, events throughout the month of March, April, May and probably beyond are being postponed (or worse, cancelled)….which sucks.

Something I had previously talked about was staying up to form and shaking off your rust, and how important it is to keep your brain in tip top shape as a photographer. With events cancelled, weddings postponed due to the coronavirus, the only thing left for me to do is take photos where I can! Pushing my creativity forward by restricting myself to 1 lens, and exclusively using in-camera effects, and only using Lightroom for color grading. Sony cameras don’t have the option to create in-camera double exposures so I had to bust out the old Nikon for this. It’s a slight departure from my usual content, but i think it’s kinda fun. Some double exposures, some shutter drag and some quadruple exposures too. Lots of fun stuff.

Gear used:
Nikon D810
50mm f/1.8

This first set was taken late in the day, around dusk. All 4 were taken at one scene, only needing to take a few steps here and there. The first image is actually two different double exposures stacked onto each other! The other few are normal double/triple exposures.

This next set was taken around noon on a cloudy day in the middle of some trees on a trail. Not quite as restricted on space but I tried to color grade it differently while still sticking to only in-camera effects.

These days my primary color grading style prioritizes natural colors (with a smidge of red/yellow/green adjustment) but I tried going back and remastering an older preset I had made! Rich earthy tones with green undertones. Should I sell presets? Maybe I’ll do that, eh

This final set was taken the day before the Shelter at Home order was issued in the state of MD. One final day of the sweet outdoors, I guess.

Instead of being taken during the day, I wanted to take advantage of the wonderful fog that was left over from a day of rain. In true esports fashion, light was scarce, and shooting conditions were far from ideal. But we made it work!

Now the kicker is, these were all created basically on the same street, and all the effects you see are also created IN-CAMERA! The only things I did before posting these was adjusting the color grade of the images + crop but no additional Photoshop was used!
It’s a fairly long stretch of road but all of this can be created just by going out at different times of day! I’ll throw up photos of the spots I shot things from in a little carousel below.

The very first set was entirely shot from that first image, within a few steps! The second set was shot from the second image, also with only a few steps here and there. And the last set had a bit more travel, with me going up and down an empty road that branches off from the main road.

All this to say: you don’t need a beautiful vineyard to make cool art. You just gotta flex those creativity muscles a bit, y’know?

What kind of stuff are you making? Let me know over on instagram at @wzhouphoto!

Hungry for more delicious art? Check out my recent collaboration with illustrator/designer extraordinaire Kathi Ha over in my first COLLABORATIONS blog post!

COLLABORATIONS: i.d.Kathi

Hey hey!!! Some exciting stuff!

Even though the state of Maryland has been issued a Stay at Home order due to the situation with the Coronavirus, that doesn’t mean we can’t stop connecting with people and making art! Recently, the INCREDIBLE illustrator+designer, i.d.Kathi hit me up with an idea for a collaboration that I couldn’t have been more excited to hop onto.

Kathi Ha (@i.d.kathi) is an illustrator and graphic designer based in MN, USA. Originally from the east coast, she misses the ocean but enjoys living in the midwestern tundra. Her art is inspired by nature, etching methods, and other creatives making the world a more interesting and honest place. She works hard to support her ferret, enjoys indoor gardening, and naps as often as she can.
Prints are available purchase on her shop, and more of her work can be found on Behance!

This is admittedly a new thing for me, but seeing illustration and photography come together in such a fantastical fashion has me excited to keep on creating. I’m super excited to be able to share the result of this awesome collaboration!

Be sure to follow the both of us to stay up to date and catch our next collaboration.

series 1: goliath beetle, oak leaves

series 2: promethea moth

series 3: two-striped grasshopper, primroses

Meagan + Chris // Quiet Waters Park, Annapolis Engagement

Meagan and Chris were so cute!!
I first met Meagan back when we were both in undergrad at UMBC working at The Retriever! I met Chris for the first time on this day, haha. When we first started chatting, we had a bit of nerves going on: perfectly normal. But by the end, we were swingin’ around, just having a grand ol’ time.

I can’t WAIT to shoot your wedding and making these beautiful photos!

Interested in making some magic with me? Shoot me a message via my contact page! Let’s chat

Ria + Anthony // Georgetown, DC

Ria and Anthony were such a cute couple! I absolutely loved strolling through Georgetown with them on a brisk, Saturday morning.

i met these two in the most different places! I first met Anthony YEARS AGO when I crashed on a friends chair so i could go to a Mat Kearney concert. i met Ria when i went on a photo walk! (she’s also an incredibly talented photographer, find her on instagram at @airia.photo!)
and through a strange twist of fate, these two found their way together! a match made in georgetown….or however that goes.

i started the day with these two, and immediately jetted off to The Anthem to shoot the Overwatch League Washington Justice Homestand! check out some photos from the Inaugural Washington Justice Homestand in my blog post here. find photos from the second homestand here!

note: they’re not actually engaged yet! but it’s fun to pretend sometimes, yeah?

Katy + Gabriel // middle of the woods

Something we as photographers rarely talk about is how we go about the process of shaking off the rust after a period of inactivity, usually after the December/January holiday season.

This past winter as a way of saying thank you to all my friends who have referred work to me I decided to hold a giveaway of sorts! That giveaway would give one couple a free shoot, at a time/location of my choosing. Naturally, I couldn’t be more excited when I drew the names of good, old friends Gabriel Auch and Katy Shen!

And so, this session was how I un-rusted myself after a couple weeks of being away from shooting. Some extra room to experiment, some extra leeway to just have even more fun with our time together.

If you’re searching for a Maryland or Baltimore wedding photographer, please reach out! I promise I’m fully warmed up and ready to make magic.

Overwatch League - Washington Justice Homestand #2

In light of all the Coronavirus news going on, I bring to you a little change of pace: esports!

On the weekend of March 7-8th, the Overwatch League once again comes to the good ol’ Washington DC for the second Washington Justice Homestand!

Coming back to The Anthem for the second weekend felt like going home.
(If you missed the first weekend, check out my photos here!)
Walking in and getting to see familiar faces from the first homestand felt the same as when I show up to a wedding and see some fellow wedding vendor friends. (If you’re new here, I normally work as a Washington DC/Virginia/Baltimore wedding photographer).

The first homestand, the Justice suffered a disappointing 0-2 weekend, but this time around we got a very respectable 1-1, winning out over Boston Uprising, and falling to New York Excelsior.
Without further ado, enjoy the photos from the second Washington Justice Overwatch League homestand.

Comfort + Mitchell // Hampden, Baltimore Wedding - REVAMP

Just over 2 years ago, I shot my very first solo wedding!

I decided it would be fun to go back and revisit this wedding and re-edit it with my current skillset and see what we’d get. I narrowed down my original set of culled images to my favorite 100, then 50, and ended up with my favorite 28. (I was gunning for 30 but just decided 2 of them weren’t good enough)

It’s really wild to see how far I’ve come in these 2 years and I’m so incredibly excited to see what the future holds.

If you’re looking for a Maryland or Baltimore wedding photographer, please reach out! I can’t wait to make some magic with you.

How To Take The Best Product Photos

Most of the time, I’m shooting in spaces with either ample natural light (weddings) or in spaces where there’s absolutely no light (esports). These days, I’m primarily a Maryland/Baltimore wedding photographer, but that wasn’t always the case! There was a period in time when I worked as the in-house photographer for a jewelry/fashion “company.” If you’re curious about that, I wrote a bit more about it in my Top 31 - Week 1 post!

Working in the studio is obviously very different from shooting in natural light. The newfound control of being able to manipulate light to your exact taste, texture, strength can be rather daunting but like all things, practice makes…..something good-ish.

The easiest thing about working with products and jewelry in this kind of style is that the pieces themselves don’t need to take any breaks. You stand them up with a bit of wax and they’ll just sit there until you’re done! The hardest thing about working with jewelry is that they won’t help you work. Getting a necklace to fall in the perfect way, or getting stubborn earrings to stand up can be one of the most frustrating things in the world.

The two best things I’ve learned are as follows:
A) Perish the thought of “I’ll fix it in post.”
Because 1. you’ll come across the problem area in your selects 2. you won’t want to fix it in post but you’ll have to 3. you might have 15 different photos all with the same problem, which may or may not even be easily fixable in Photoshop.
B) Sometimes, less is more.
Jewelry is shiny sometimes. And sometimes, shiny things will catch light in awkward ways. For all my planning and efforts to optimize a shooting space to catch, bounce, and retain as much light as possible, sometimes the best lighting setups I’ve created for pieces were simple 1 light + 1 reflector setups. Using flags to block off certain angles have saved me hours of reflection removal in photoshop. All light can be good light, but sometimes less light is better than more light.

The majority of these photos were taken on a Canon 6D Mark ii, paired with either the Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro or the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L. Lighting was a mix of a Profoto B1X + 51” umbrella or twin Canon speedlites, all within a custom white 40” v-flat setup I made to bounce light.

There’s an entire world of product photography that I would love to get more involved in but just for now, this is what I’ve got.

I can’t tell you where to find these pieces but I can tell you how* to reach out to me if you’re interested in working together :)

Overwatch League - Washington Justice Inaugural Homestand

This past weekend I had the incredible privilege of being able to shoot at the Inaugural Washington Justice Homestand - 02/22-23/2020!

Walking into The Anthem and seeing the hundreds of seats, waiting for eager spectators to fill was nothing short of magical. At the back of house, the stage had been reconfigured to have two long tables with PC setups for the players to use along with a massive LED screen in the center.

With so much or North American esports being centered around Los Angeles, it was incredible to be able to see what was once a distant dream come to fruition in our very own hometown of Washington DC.

Even though I’ve been primarily working as a wedding photographer, I must admit that competition has always been a bit more attractive to me than love. Not that I don’t find incredible joy in being able to share momentous occasions with my clients; I do. I just love the dichotomy of finding my footing in spaces that contain passion of two very different flavors.

What is Overwatch?

If you aren’t familiar with Overwatch, my good friend Josh from The Game Gym wrote a pretty good little summary:

Overwatch is an objective-based first person shooting game created by video game developer, Blizzard. The goal of Overwatch is to capture a point (king of the hill) or move a payload from point A to point B. Whether it is moving the payload or capturing the point, the goal is to get the enemy team out of the way. You will see a lot of bright lights and other movements, don't worry about the small stuff. Its all about kicking the enemy team out from where you want to be. If you can take 5 minutes, this What Is Overwatch will help explain things a little more.

Jose + Jessica // Downtown Philadelphia Colonial Dames Society Wedding

This one was…..fun. This wedding also happened 3 years ago.

Jose was one of the first people I met in my journey as a budding photographer. He took me under his wing and brought me along when he went on his own shoots, and eventually asked me to help shoot his wedding! Not only are the two of them photographers, this also must have been the 2nd or 3rd wedding I’d ever shot.

These photos are so different from how I shoot and approach weddings now, but it’s good to remember where we started from.
